With a beautiful, warm tone, Sweetcase’s free piano is on par with expensive competitors. It sounds great out of the box, but there are a handful of settings you can change to shape its tone. The Twonker is a free VST MIDI Plugin that allows a digital piano (or any MIDI instrument) to play tones from the Overtone Series. It is designed to run within most Digital Audio Workstations as a Synth Plugin on MacOS, Windows, and Linux. The Twonker allows a musician to play overtones in a predictable and flexible manner, using a regular MIDI. This free VST piano is a fantastic, fully featured virtual instrument that provides fantastic realism and sound quality. RDG Audio’s Free Piano comes with staccato and auto sustain features. It also has a seperate control for adding complementary strings and pads on top of the piano sound. This plugin is available for both Mac and PC.

Run Windows VST plugins on Linux

Originally developed at Breakfast Quay but now grown up and movedaway, dssi-vst is an adapter that allows users of Linux audiosoftware to take VST and VSTi audio effects and instrument pluginscompiled for Windows, and load them into native LADSPA or DSSI plugin hosts.

Nubi Plus VSTi come with a VST FX for adding the Leslie effect: Spinner VST. The two make a super groovy combo, and gives you this nice Hammond B3 organ sound. She’s just like you and me, but she’s homeless. Another through-and-through free VST for grand piano enthusiasts, DSK’s The Grand incorporates a sampled grand piano and boasts 4 velocity layers per note. Not to mention, it features a typical ASDR envelope, reverb and is light on the processor. A very nice FM modeled electric piano. EP-station is now freeware. The plugin is not a straight emulation of a Rhodes piano. It can also do the ” DX 7 e-piano “, the famous FM piano as heard on 95% of the pop / ballad / tv show theme / etc. Tracks produced between 1983 & 1989. The EP-station also features a chorus & a phaser effect.

Plugins run at full speed for most audio processing, although theiruser interfaces are slower because of the Windows emulation.

dssi-vst can also be used to run 32-bit Windows VST pluginsin a 64-bit Linux host.

dssi-vst requires Wine libraries for Windowscompatibility, and is therefore best obtained directly from a Linuxdistribution repository that can provide all of the required librariesat the time of installation. Installing dssi-vst without adistribution package can be quite tricky to do.

dssi-vst is free, open source software. It is distributedunder the GNU General Public License, with a special exception topermit redistributing it in binary form when built with the non-freeSteinberg VST SDK. (The default build does not use the non-free SDK,and so is completely GPL.)
