This is also the first in a complete series of “Model Reviews” here at OrchestralTemplates.com, which will show examples of specific libraries that I think can find a place in your model. What makes these comments a little different from those found elsewhere is that I will only show you products that I personally use in my daily work and that I absolutely recommend. These analyzes will also highlight the specific use in models, with regard to versatility, adaptation to workflows, and with particular emphasis on the best way to integrate these products into a larger whole (think mix, interoperability, learning curve … ).

CSS offers five standard sections (Violins I, Violins II, Viola, Celli, and Basses). The nomenclature is a little out of the standard (first violin … cellos …), so some name conformity may be required depending on your nomenclature standards. Added to that is a complete set and a Lite set. The individual sections and the complete set have identical joints and characteristics.

First of all, the sound is very good – much better than I expected. Although similar microphone positions still exist (Close, Main, Hall or Full Mix of the other three vs. Close, Stage, Hall or Full Mix of the other three in the previous Cinematic Strings library), the change of location (from the concert hall to the Trackdown, an Australian stage) and the artists definitely made a difference. I would say that there is a big change in the sound of Cinematic Strings, with a rounder, fuller, more uniform, more cohesive, and mixed sound (with less treble and sometimes less powerful).

When it comes to recordings, there is always an element of personal taste when it comes to the aesthetics of the recording, so if you are looking mainly for ‘brightness’ or ‘light’, you may be attracted by the high frequencies in Cinematic Strings. as opposed to Cinematic Studio Strings. On the other hand, if you find that Cinematic Strings has a lot of reverberation, nervousness, or irregularity, you will definitely want to hear Cinematic Studio Strings. Note that Cinematic Studio Strings uses a slightly smaller set than Cinematic Strings.

CSS features a Hollywood-style string section, recorded in position in the first Australian scoring phase – Trackdown. From the colorful vibrato of the high violins to the dark, woody textures of the bass cello and bass notes, you will be instantly inspired. Our goal was to create an instrument that could be played instantly, sound well out of the box, and enjoy immediate customer support.
REVOLUTIONARY INTERFACE
At the heart of the CSS is its cutting-edge GUI, based on our previous Cinematic Strings 2 library, which was critically acclaimed. This means a short but nice patch list, easily assignable access keys and MIDI CCs, and a complete mixer with more reverb output routing options.
REALISTIC AND EXPRESSIVE
CSS has an incredibly realistic legato engine. We meticulously record actual legato transitions for each note, from top to bottom, including beautiful portamento. We also record “reverb” samples, which means that you can play legato notes repeated smoothly and with authentic realism. We kept an authentic and human element in the sound so that you feel like you’re in a live session. With this new level of realism, you will feel comfortable using CSS without reverb; in fact, we recommend it! All of our demos were created without reverberation – all you hear is the natural air captured in the samples.
FULLY MIXED – LOAD AND PLAY
We use a variety of excellent ribbon and condenser microphones to record CSS over three distances, which you can combine to create your own unique mix within Kontakt or via the recently added outbound routing option. Alternatively, you can use our pre-mixed combination of the 3 if you want great sound with fewer features. Full and Lite Ensemble patches optimize workflow and are great for sketching or filling a track.
COMPATIBLE WITH FREE KONTAKT PLAYER
Cinematic Studio Strings is fully compatible with the free Kontakt player and will function as a standalone product, without the need to purchase additional software.
